Nampa, Idaho -- One of the biggest concerns
right now for area schools are student athletes
that suffer from respiratory illnesses like
asthma.
While pre-game practice got underway at
Skyview High School tonight (Friday), certified
athletic trainers kept a close eye on the
students that might have a hard time breathing
under the current conditions.
And some like Rusty Sullivan say it's a
problem they've been watching all week.
"We try to keep track of them -- make sure
that they have their inhalers with them, have a
prescription, make sure that they've seen a
physician and keeping up on that," he said, "and
then we have also limited outside activities
yesterday to an hour was the max that we let any
of the teams practice outside."
According to the National Athletic Trainers'
Association, schools like Skyview are all
equipped with certified athletic trainers
(ATCs) who are members of the allied health
care community.
They're specifically trained to deal with
athletes and physical conditions which may
impair their ability to participate -- including
asthma related issues.
